The Wairarapa Awards 2O23

The WBS Wairarapa Awards

The WBS Wairarapa Awards is THE opportunity for outstanding local businesses and organisations, whether they are a start-up or have a long history, to share their stories, celebrate their success and gain recognition for their brand, team and stakeholders.

The event is powered by Business Wairarapa, who are shining a light on the businesses, organisations and people who are doing amazing things across our region.

This year, Masterton Trust Lands Trust has partnered with us for the first time to present the Not-For-Profit Award, which recognises those not-or-profit organisations who are supporting and contributing to Wairarapa communities.

We would like to thank all our fantastic partners, and especially WBS who have come on board as naming rights partner for 2023. WBS has been an integral part of the Wairarapa community for 150 years, helping families, community and businesses prosper.

What will the Judges be looking for?

The Judges have been asked to choose finalists that they believe are standout businesses or organisations.

A successful business / organisation may not necessarily be a standout business / organisation. Neither is a standout business / organisation one that just has a beautifully designed website.

Standout might mean:

  • the business / organisation has reached a critical mass
  • has achieved significant goals set a few years earlier
  • become profitable for the first time or achieved a certain level of profitability or growth
  • has gone national or international
  • has received some industry or personal recognition.

In addition, judges will also be looking for evidence that your business / organisation is contributing to the growth and wellbeing of Wairarapa.

The Judging Process:

Finalists will be chosen by three independent judges facilitated by an independent convener, who meet to discuss each entry and decide on who has goes through to the final stage for 2023.

Wairarapa is a tight community, in order to maintain objectivity and uphold the integrity and impartiality of the judging process, it is our policy to keep the judges’ identities anonymous.

It is important to note that Business Wairarapa, the local Wairarapa business associations, Destination Wairarapa, and The Wairarapa Awards event team do not take part in the judging process.

The independent convenor both facilitates and chairs the judging panel. It is also important to note that the judges do not do visits, interviews or receive presentations.

Judges may question if a business / organisation has been entered into a relevant category and can use discretion and agree by consensus to move the entry into a more fitting category. This may not be the entrants preferred category. Finalists may only appear in one category.

Wairarapa Finalists in the 2023 Wellington Gold Awards are automatically entered into The WBS Wairarapa Awards and are considered by the judges alongside the rest of the 2023 entrants..

Things you may want to think about:

In providing information to demonstrate how you might be a standout business / organisation, you may want to think about the following key questions:

What is your unique point of difference?

Do you have a clear, valuable mission that makes an impact? Will the judges have a clear sense of what you are trying to do and why?

How is your general structure? Are your products, services or programmes aligned to your mission? Can you give examples so the judges can appreciate this?

Do you have a strategic plan? What are your goals and priorities? How do you measure your success in achieving them? How can the judges see that you have achieved these?

What has been the impact of your mission? Can you see and measure this impact? Are you able to provide clear metrics for the judges to understand this?

Due to the commercially sensitive nature of financial reporting, we do not ask for detailed financial information, however in order to support your answers to the above questions, it is helpful to provide key financial or statistical markers such as:

  • profit
  • growth
  • number of employees
  • production figures
  • sales
  • return on capital investment
  • staff and customer satisfaction metrics
  • philanthropy, donations or sponsorship made support of a group or community

Factors such as branding, marketing cut-through, the uniqueness of your business strategy, levels of innovation and inspiration are all very relevant too.

Closing date for entries is 5pm, 28 August 2023.

Finalists will be revealed on Thursday, 14 September 2023.

The WBS Wairarapas Awards Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 14 November 2023 at the George Hood Auditorium, Hood Aerodrome, Masterton.

The winners of each category all compete for the Trust House Supreme Award to be announced at the Awards Ceremony.
